Hawkwind in America during the 70s

Just wondering, Why were not Hawkwind as famous as Led zeppelin in America by the 70s?
 
I guess they don't play American 'blues' based rock like Zepplin or the stones, their 'space rock' sound is European. Having said that, they do have a fan base in the US and tour there regularly.
 
Probably HW were more spaced out psychedelically and not so "easy listening" as other UK bands of that time.
